Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are onto their next case, and diamonds are the name of the game.
Jatin Patel is murdered in his jewellery store, but nothing is taken other than a large single piece of 'rough'. There are two witnesses both of which at the time manage to get away. There are scant details about the perpetrator and he doesn't leave too many clues.
Vimal, a young Indian, is one of the key witnesses, and he is having his own problems at home. He just wants to be a sculptor, but his father wants to see him follow in the family tradition and continue to be a diamond cutter.
Vimal is injured but he knows he needs to get away, and he while he gets some help from his girlfriend he is never safe.
Several other characters enter the fray, some with alternative intentions and it is up to Rhyme, Sachs and co to work out the connections.
