Our main character 14-year-old Adunni’s fortunes change when her mother dies. This change is not for the better and not what her mother wanted. She is taken from school and “sold” to be the 3rd wife of an old man in exchange for rent.
After tragedy occurs Adunni runs away as she tries to get away from events that transpire to overtake her and is secretly sold as a house servant.
Adunni wants an education. She wants to be heard, to make a difference. Events only inspire her to hold this dream close.
At her new house she finds a book with facts about Nigeria which are included at the start of some of the chapters.
We learn about the hardships she faces and the friends she makes on her journey as she tries to keep her dream alive.
This book kept me wanting to know how Adunni’s life turned out. It made me think about how different our lives are, how different our childrens lives are to hers.
I found it quite an inspiring story as even though she faced great hardship her want for a better life for herself, her family and other girls kept her going. Finding a friend that believed in her was also an important piece of the story.
A read that makes you think. Well worth it.
